Learn about and discuss "Alameda Point Revitalization Initiative"

Hike and meeting for Sierra Clubbers (and friends)

Hike: Saturday, May 16, 10 am - 3 pm, meet at ferry building near Rosenblum Winery (off Main Street), Alameda.

Meeting: Sunday, May 17, 2 - 4 pm, Home of Truth, in the Garden Cottage (enter on the side), 1300 Grand Street (at Alameda Avenue), Alameda.

The city of Alameda is approaching a critical decision regarding future development at Alameda Point, the site of the former Alameda Naval Air Station. Proponents are now gathering signatures for the "Alameda Point Revitalization Initiative", which would allow SunCal Companies, a national property-development company, to build 4,500 housing units and redevelop more than 500 acres of land. This unique location is among the last large centrally located developable spaces in the Bay Area, and so it offers an important opportunity for good - or bad - development. Complicating considerations include a Superfund site, the sea-level location, access limitations, and existing old and unusual structures. Alamedans must decide the best use of this land, whether for housing, light industry, open space, or some mix.

The Sierra Club has not to date taken any position on the measure.

The Sierra Club's Northern Alameda County Group invites you to come on a day hike and to a general meeting to see the site and to learn about and discuss the issues.

The meeting will include a potluck lunch. Please bring a salad, dessert, beverage, or something else to share. For more information on the meeting, contact Sharyn Loshakoff at (510)521-5496 or email to slosh747 -at- comcast.net

Northern Alameda Group Green Friday

"East Bay Green Tours"

Friday, May 8, social hour and potluck dinner - 6 pm, speaker and discussion - 7, Sierra Club Bay Chapter Office, 2530 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley.

The Northern Alameda County Group's "Green Friday" events combine interesting speakers with potlucks; please bring a healthy dish to share.

Marissa LaMagna, founder of the East Bay Green Tours, will discuss the myriad ways of advocating local green businesses, for their economic impact and jobs creation. She will address the importance of "experiencing sustainable solutions in action", not just reading about sustainability in books. The Green Tours are part educational seminar and part engaging excursion, featuring local green-business pioneers, innovators, and community gems who might not otherwise receive recognition. A long-time environmental advocate, Marissa is the founding director of Studio Rasa, a green-certified arts and wellness center in Berkeley and is a board member of the Sustainable Business Alliance.

To RSVP (appreciated but not required), or for more information please contact Justin Martello at (510)549-2525 or email to justin -at- effectiveassets.net
