San Francisco advances on CleanPowerSF

In San Francisco we've certainly had our share of delay and frustration in seeing the City's energy plans move toward fruition. Lately, however, we've seen some encouraging developments.

The city's Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has finally hired a program director for Community Choice Aggregation and has given the program a new (and easier-to-understand) name, CleanPowerSF, with an eye towards a proper public marketing and education effort slated for later in 2009.

The Board of Supervisors recently authorized two additional positions to support the program - an amazing show of political support for CleanPowerSF considering the huge city layoffs otherwise occurring.

Allies of the Club and supporters of the program have recently been seated on San Francisco's Local Agency Formation Commission, a key oversight body to ensure that the SFPUC quickens its pace and reaches its deadlines.

Our Sierra Club Bay Chapter organizers have delivered to city agencies 4,000 letters calling for continued progress and a quickened pace. SFPUC staff has set a quickened timetable for completing necessary studies and other preparatory documents, and the newly appointed members of the SFPUC have set a date for a key meeting with members of the Board of Supervisors to discuss the next steps for developing the CleanPowerSF program.

Contracts for critical consulting work are under way to prepare by the end of the year the program that will then be released for responses from potential service providers.

The Club is continuing to monitor things closely and will maintain its critical role in championing CleanPowerSF. To join in these efforts contact Chapter conservation organizer or call (510) 848-0800, ext. 307
