In March, Diane Smith of the Mount Diablo Group and Sierra Singles will lead a series of progressively more difficult hikes to introduce the beginning hiker to the rewards of hiking.
If you have thought about hiking but have yet to do so, this is a way to learn what the Bay Area has to offer and how to get started. The first hike will be a 1A (less than six miles, less than 1,000 feet of elevation gain, with one steep downhill) in the Shell Ridge Open Space in Walnut Creek on Sun., March 1. Diane will tell about places to hike, clothing and equipment, safety, and other hiking skills. If you are a novice hiker, please attend this introductory hike before attempting the other, more difficult, hikes in the series. For more details, see the calendar listing on page I of this Yodeler.
On Sun., March 8, the second hike in the series will take place in Sunol Regional Wilderness. On this 2B hike (6 - 10 miles, 1,000 - 2,000 feet of elevation gain) participants will be able to use the skills they learned in the previous 1A hike.
The third and final hike of the series will be a 3B hike (10 - 15 miles, 1,000 - 2,000 feet of elevation gain) around Briones Reservoir on Sun., March 15. This will solidify the learning from the previous two hikes.
Experienced hikers are welcome on the second and third hikes. More specific information about these more advanced hikes will appear as regular calendar entries in the March-April Yodeler.
