Bay Area Young Sierrans is official!

New Sierra Club Bay Chapter section is organizing activities for folks 18 - 35

Join in Sierra Club activities with other folks 18 to 35! The Bay Area Young Sierrans is officially approved as an activities section - and we are planning lots of great hikes and social events for ourselves - the younger nature-lovers and outdoorspeople of the Bay Area.

Exactly one year ago, the Yodeler printed a call for Sierra Clubbers 18 to 35 to organize outings and activities for ourselves. As the year progressed, a five-member organizing committee came together to help establish what is now the Bay Area Young Sierrans. Our thanks to Christina Armor, Eric Chu, Kristin Herron, Devin Jackson, and Nate Snyder for their ardency and effort in organizing this amazing beginning. You guys rock!

Our kick-off event came last June - a beach clean-up and bonfire at Ocean Beach that drew over 40 enthusiastic individuals for our very first event. For many it was their first Sierra Club experience. We chatted and feasted on and on around the fire until the beach closed, and we collected over 20 bags of trash - a grand combination of Sierra Club conviviality and conservation ideals, and a great stepping stone for Young Sierrans. Since then, we've held museum nights at the De Young and Oakland Museums, an exploration of the California Academy of Sciences, a picnic in Redwood Park, and hikes at Mount Tamalpais, Claremont Canyon, and Las Trampas Ridge.

Join the Young Sierrans e-mail list to find out more great events. We don't have exact dates scheduled yet, but in December we're planning another museum night at the De Young to check out new exhibitions, and another visit to our animal friends at the California Academy of Sciences. For skiers and snowboarders, we hope to organize ski trips to the Tahoe area. There will be frequent hikes throughout the year. To join the list for a monthly update, e-mail us at bayareayoungsierrans -at- gmail.com

You too can help build Young Sierrans' future. We have opportunities for everyone who would like to take a leadership role or help guide the direction of our section. To volunteer or to ask questions, e-mail us.
