Kids and racing snowmobiles shouldn't mix; get snow machines out of Tahoe Meadows
Each winter around 38,000 kids and family members ski, snowshoe, and play in the snow at Tahoe Meadows, the most popular non-commercial destination in the Lake Tahoe area. Mixed with them are snowmobiles (about 2,000 user-days annually). Machines capable of 100 mph race dangerously close to kids and families at play.
Pressure from muscle-powered winter recreationists got the section of Tahoe Meadows south of the Mount Rose Highway closed to snowmobiles, but about two square miles on the north side have been left open. This portion is too small for serious snowmobilers, but enables and encourages trespass into the adjacent Mount Rose Wilderness and Galena drainage, where snowmobiles are not permitted.
Tahoe Meadows is closed to motorized users (ATV's, dirt bikes, four-wheelers) in summer, and the same standards should apply in winter. Practical, legal alternatives for snowmobile use exist on many thousands of acres in the region.
