East Bay Dinner
"Have Dog, Will Travel! Ten Months on the Road!"
Thursday, December 4, no-host cocktails/social hour - 6 pm, dinner - 7:00, program - 8:00 pm, at Berkeley Yacht Club on the Berkeley Marina, one block north of the west end of University Avenue (ample free parking is available in the Marina parking lots).
Travel with Sylvia S. Rose and her faithful dog Meadow, as the two of them take us on a road trip through America and Canada, showing us digital images of some of the most beautiful scenes in America. Sylvia and Meadow set out in her Subaru station wagon, pulling a 13-foot "Scamp" trailer, and the two of them rolled over 35,000 miles, camping their way through the United States and Canada. She began her trip in late June, motored north to Alaska and the Yukon Territory via the Marine Highway Ferry, and then returned driving south on the Alcan Highway. Following the autumn colors, she crossed Montana and the Dakotas, focusing on historic Indian cultural sites. She went east as far as Niagara Falls and then headed south for the winter. Her visit to Charleston SC included a stop to work on a Habitat-for-Humanity housing project, before she traveled farther south and into the Florida Keys.
In early spring she headed west, stopping at Memphis, St. Louis, the Natchez Trace, San Antonio, Big Bend National Park, and Carlsbad Caverns. Then in New Mexico and Arizona she explored Indian Country, taking in the sights, sounds, and scents of the great American desert and some of the high plateaus on the west side of the Rockies. In April, 10 months after her start, she made a final stop in Yosemite Valley, enjoying waterfalls in full flow and dogwood trees in bloom.
A long-time resident of Concord and Walnut Creek, Sylvia has traveled and photographed extensively and resided for extended periods of time in Japan, Israel, and Switzerland.
