San Francisco Dinner: "A Unique Trek in Exotic Yemen"

Thursday, November 20, social hour - 6 pm, dinner - 7, show - 8, at City Forest Lodge, 254 Laguna Honda Boulevard, San Francisco (across from Laguna Honda Hospital and downhill from Forest Hill Station; take Muni's K, L, M, or 43). Come early for street parking (no sidewalk parking).

"Years ago I read Freya Stark's books about Yemen," says intrepid hiker and superb photographer Sigrid Selle, "and her photos of the mud-brick tower houses in the Hadramawt Valley sparked my interest. In 2006 I realized my dream and spent a month traveling from the capital of Sana'a to the mountains, where we hiked on ancient trails between small enclaves, meeting the friendly inhabitants. Then we descended to the hot and humid coastline of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, visiting colorful markets along the way. A drive through the desert finally took us to the Wadi Hadramawt, where we admired the fascinating tower houses in the oasis-towns of Sayun, Tarim, and Shibam.

At the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen has most-hospitable people, fascinating architecture, and beautiful scenery - from mountains to desert and down to the sea. I would love to share my slides and impressions with those who are interested in this very unique travel destination."
