Is High Speed Rail heading for detour?
At its December meeting, the California High Speed Rail (HSR) Authority released a "Summary of Key Issues" document, in which it responded to the broad
themes of comments received on its Draft Environmental Impact Report/Statement (EIR/S) on the HSR connection to the Bay Area. Authority consultants essentially
dismissed all concerns raised by environmental groups. Although (contrary to some press accounts) boardmembers made no formal decision, they did make it clear that they
intend to proceed with the Pacheco Pass as the preferred alternative, despite the controversy.
Concerned that the Authority will not be objective, the Sierra Club's California/Nevada Regional Conservation Committee in January reaffirmed its support
for building High Speed Rail and for routing it via the Altamont Pass.
