Obscure agencies making key decisions

The Yodeler regularly asks readers to write to your elected city councils or boards of supervisors, but many important decisions are made by agenices headed by more obscure bodies. Sometimes the appointees to these boards and commissions are elected officials, but there is often little public attention to the actions they take in these secondary roles.

In this Yodeler we have three articles about important decisions being made by such agencies. Your letters to these agencies can make a big difference.

  • The Metropolitan Transportation Commission is preparing its Regional Transportation Plan for the next 20 years. Help it to decide on a plan that will lead to less congestion, better air, less carbon dioxide, and more-affordable transportation options.
  • The High Speed Rail Authority is deciding on the route for High Speed Rail between the Bay Area and Southern California. One alternative route would cut through the internationally acclaimed Grasslands Ecological Area. Urge the Authority to choose the Altamont route that will protect Grasslands and shorten most Bay Area travel times.
  • The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is considering regulations on wood stoves and fireplaces. Residential wood-burning is the single largest source of winter particle pollution. Urge the District to adopt the most health-protective form of the rules.

WhatYouCanDo - This month's key action

Officials on such agencies do not usually get a lot of public input. Your letters can make a big difference. Please read these articles and write promptly.
