Bringing Community Choice Energy to the East Bay - a workshop
Wednesday, September 26, 6:30 - 8:30 pm, at Bay Area Academy, 2201 Broadway (at 22nd Street).
Imagine a Bay Area deriving much of its electricity from wind, sun and other renewable sources, which are so abundant all around us. The investments needed to
make this dream a reality are enabled by Community Choice Aggregation, a municipal energy-purchasing plan that is enabled
by recent state legislation. Sierra Club California has enthusiastically supported this plan since it was first championed by local non profit groups in 2002, because it is one
of the most innovative and effective means of increasing use of renewable energy.
With the passage of Community Choice legislation in San Francisco, the focus has turned to the East Bay, especially Oakland. Come to a workshop focused
on bringing CCA to the East Bay. The Sierra Club's workshop will be aimed at educating leaders and training advocates. We are inviting an array of panelists
including renewable-energy advocates, Community Choice experts, and elected officials. This promises to be an exciting event where you can "network" with
renewable-energy advocates from all over the East Bay.
We believe that political momentum for passing CCA exists in Oakland and the East Bay. In June, Community Choice was discussed at various Oakland meetings,
and most City Council members have expressed tentative to enthusiastic support (We are still, however, awaiting direction from Mayor Dellums' office.)
Because seating is limited, please RSVP to Chapter conservation manager
or call (510) 848-0800, ext. 307
The Bay Chapter is also working with an organization called Bay Localize to run computer calculations to estimate the
solar-power potential of all roofs in Oakland. Volunteers are needed to help with this project. You should have basic
computer skills and be able to work at least four hours per week for three months. To help, please call Anna.
