Mount Diablo Group: "Travels through South America"
Wednesday, July 11, 7 pm, Winslow Center, 2590 Pleasant Hill Road, Pleasant Hill (corner of Taylor Boulevard
and Pleasant Hill Road).
Join us at the next general meeting of the Mount Diablo Group as Janess Hanson presents a slide program of her travels
through Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, and Peru.
South America is a continent of extremes, including the earth's largest rain forest, its driest desert, and its
longest mountain range and only the Himalayas are higher than the Andes.
Highlights of Janess' program include the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires; remote Patagonia; a journey across the
Andean Mountains via the "Lakes District" of Argentina and Chile, with landscapes ranging from bamboo forests
to glaciers and volcanoes; the unique coast of Chile; and finally Peru, visiting sacred Inca temple sites near Cuzco,
including world-famous Machu Picchu. Elevations ranged from sea level to 12,000 feet, landscapes from the barren steppes
of Patagonia to the alpine scenery of the Andes and the lush tropical jungles of Peru.
Janess Hanson is a Sierra Club hike leader and member of the Executive Committee of the Delta Group.
