When you're in Yosemite, visit LeConte LodgeLocated in Yosemite Valley, LeConte Memorial Lodge provides information on conservation, national parks, and the High Sierra, and serves as a center for almost 100 environmental programs and workshops annually. Club members and the public are encouraged to visit LeConte, which is open and staffed with a professional curator and volunteers from May to September. The Lodge was built by the Sierra Club in 1903 in honor of Joseph LeConte, eminent geologist and early director of the Sierra Club. LeConte is a lodge in the sense of a meeting place, the home of the Sierra Club in Yosemite, as there are no accommodations at this facility. Most LeConte programs are conducted on Friday - Sunday evenings. They are free, generally draw 20 - 100 people, and last 1 - 1.5 hours. The varied programs have included rangers discussing local flora and fauna, poets reflecting on the natural world, geologists discussing the natural forces at work in Yosemite, climbers discussing the proud history of adventure, photographers presenting and discussing nature photography, and singers sharing nature- or environment-oriented songs.
