East Bay Dinner: "Adventuring and Hiking in Tasmania"

Thursday, May 24, no-host cocktails/social hour - 6 pm, dinner - 7:00, program - 8:00, Berkeley Yacht Club on the Berkeley Marina, one block north of the west end of University Avenue (ample free parking is available in the Marina parking lots).

In January 2005 David Moyer helped lead an Orinda Hiking Club trip to Tasmania, Australia, where the group hiked over 100 miles all around the island, including six days "hut-to-hut" on the famous Overland Track in the island's interior mountains. Tasmania is by far Australia's smallest state, about the size of West Virginia, and comprises less than 1% of the land area of the continent. Despite this, the island has a very rich flora and fauna, including one of only three Southern Hemisphere temperate rain forests, the others being in Patagonia and New Zealand.

Join David as he travels from the dry eastern part of the island and its miles of deserted beaches, to the lush west coast and Gordon and Franklin River estuaries, on to the world-heritage Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair area and finally to Australia's best known tramping route, the spectacular Overland Track.

David Moyer, a former U.S. Navy Medical Corps captain and flight surgeon, is now chief of allergy at the Oakland and Richmond Kaiser Hospitals. He spends as much time as possible on the trail hiking and backpacking, and has previously given East Bay Dinner slide shows on Antarctica, Patagonia, Peru, and Norway.

Cost of dinner and program is $23, including tax and tip. For a reservation, please send your check, payable to "Sierra Club," with your name, your telephone number, and the names of your guests, to:
