Transportation and Land Use Coalition"Bay Area Solutions to Global Warming: Cooling the Planet with Walkable Communities Connected by World Class Transit"Saturday, March 24, 9:30 am - 4 pm, First Unitarian Church, 685 14th Street (at Castro Street), downtown Oakland (near 12th Street BART and many AC Transit lines). Although energy-efficient light bulbs and hybrid cars get a lot of attention, the most important way to fight global warming is by reducing how much we drive. The Transportation and Land Use Coalition (TALC) and its more than 90 member and affiliate organizations across the Bay Area are working on a wide range of ways to reduce driving that will help cool the planet and create a more livable, sustainable, and socially just region. We are working together to create a region of walkable neighborhoods and cities connected by fast and convenient transit with shops, services, parks, and a range of housing options nearby. The resulting communities don't just fight global warming; they also improve our quality of life! Join others from around the region working on smart growth, public transportation, bicycle/pedestrian safety, affordable housing, environmental protection, community health, and more at TALC's 10th Annual Summit. This year's Summit offers nearly 20 sessions on a wide range of topics: transit-oriented development, high-speed rail, safe streets for bikers and pedestrians, effective lobbying, and much more. Whether you are new to these issues or an experienced activist, an elected official or a planner, TALC's Summit is the place to get involved, strategize, network, and hone your advocacy skills. Advance registration is just $15, including lunch and materials, but space is limited. Register today at www.transcoalition.org or call (510) 740-3150, ext. 318. Admission at the door, space permitting, is $30. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. This event is not sponsored by the Sierra Club, but the Sierra Club Bay Chapter is a proud member of TALC, the organization sponsoring this event.
