Keep LNG terminal from Ventura coastlineThis spring, the California State Lands Commission will hold hearings on a massive and polluting Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal proposed 14 miles off the coast of Malibu and Ventura County. The project by the Australian corporation BHP Billiton would be visible from shore, rising more than 14 stories above the ocean surface and stretching out to the length of three football fields. It would be the first LNG terminal constructed anywhere along California's coast, and its design is unlike any other terminal in the world. In addition to the dangers of placing an untested, floating terminal in the seismically unstable Santa Barbara Channel, the Sierra Club is concerned about the risks to the Ormond Beach Wetlands from new pipeline construction, the endangering of migrating whales and dolphins, and the more than 500 tons of smog-producing air pollution the project would emit every year. More than 1,000 people came out to protest this LNG project the last time the commission met in 2006. This will be the commission's final hearing and will focus on both the project's lease and its Environmental Impact Report (EIR), which if not certified can not be sent to Gov. Schwarzenegger for approval. WhatYouCanDo Write to the California State Lands Commission at: c/o Paul D. Thayer, Executive Officer
Urge the commission to deny the lease and not to certify the EIR for BHP Billiton's LNG terminal. This factory at sea is too dangerous for California and for our coastal environment. For more information visit www.sierraclub.org/ca/coasts/lng
