San Francisco Dinner: "John Muir's Sierra"

Thursday, February 15, social hour 6 pm, dinner 7, show 8 - City Forest Lodge, 254 Laguna Honda Boulevard, San Francisco (across from Laguna Honda Hospital and downhill from Forest Hill Station; take Muni's K, L, M, or 43). Come early for street parking (no sidewalk parking please).

John Muir said, "Between every two pine trees lies a door to a new life."
Come wander in wonder, on- and off-trail, through the Sierra Nevada in a vivid slide show that reminds us why we call ourselves the Sierra Club. Whether through a wildflower-sprinkled canyon in Yosemite, by a sapphire lake basin in Kings Canyon, or atop one of the rocky peaks surrounding Pioneer Basin, you will learn how to get there, see why we go, and hear stories of those who have been. This is the perfect time to pull out the maps, plot your summer, dream of discovery, and chuckle over good times spent up high with good friends.

Karen Najarian is a guide and instructor for the Yosemite backpack trips of REI Adventures. She has been backpacking the Sierra for 30 years and teaching the art to others for 20. While teaching skills, she shares her knowledge of the Sierra, whether it be about wildflowers, geology, or the human history of the place and uses the experience as a metaphor for our daily lives. Karen facilitates a space for new personal awareness and an opportunity for personal growth.

Karen has published in Sierra Heritage Magazine; Yosemite, the journal of the Yosemite Association; and the Martinez Gazette. She has a permanent Sierra wildflower photographic display at the natural-history museum at Diablo Valley College. A UC Berkeley graduate in bacteriology, she is a clinical lab scientist at Alameda Hospital.

Polly Bolling, outreach specialist for REI's Bay Area stores called her show "a delight! It's not only visually stunning, but a great opportunity to learn some fascinating tidbits about the geology, botany, and history of exploration of the Sierra. Your warmth, enthusiasm, and openness really engaged the crowd here in Berkeley. Great stories!"
