Car Campers honor Jack Sneddon
More than 50 people gathered in mid-September under the redwoods at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park for a final four-day campout to celebrate Jack Sneddon on
his retirement after over 20 years as a leader of the Car Camping Section.
Over the years Jack has introduced hundreds of people to camping and provided them with sumptuous meals (for which he does all the cooking). His trips
have covered the length and breadth of California from the Mojave Desert to coastal beaches and redwoods to the Sierra and Cascades.
The farewell trip included many tributes to Jack - a cake provided by Jeanne Magnani, a gift box of more than 100 notes written to Jack, and a demonstration of
stilt-walking by Shawn Dubin. Also recognized were his faithful trip assistants Bill Race and Bill Black and hike leader Lucy Henderson.
Jack has been very active in recruiting others to become active in the Bay Chapter, particularly the Solo Sierrans. He has encouraged many to lead hikes and come
on camping trips. Janess Hanson of the Delta Group remembers how he introduced her to hike leading and got her involved in
Chapter activities. Though his camp trips were
often quite large, he managed to give personal encouragement and recognition to almost everyone present. He will be sorely missed.
