Wilderness Committee - Clearcutting and the homebuilding industryA daylong workshopSaturday, December 2, 10:30 am - 4:45 pm in the Yosemite Room, Sierra Club national Headquarters, 85 Second Street (near Mission Street), San Francisco (near Montgomery BART/Muni station). Rampant clearcutting is still destroying the forests of the Sierra Nevada, and most of this wood is being consumed by the U.S. homebuilding industry. Over the past 15 years literally tens of thousands of acres of Sierra forests have been clearcut by Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI), destroying habitat for species such as the Pacific fisher, reducing biodiversity as huge swaths of land are cleared and replaced with tree plantations, and even increasing fire risks as tree canopy is removed, encouraging the growth of flammable brush. To stop this destruction, the homebuilding industry must start demanding better wood from SPI and other suppliers. To learn more and find out how you can help, come to a daylong workshop sponsored by the Bay Chapter Wilderness Committee and ForestEthics. Learn more about SPI and the Sierra, receive training on campaign tactics and messaging, and most importantly, find out how you can help stop the rampant clearcutting in the Sierra! RSVP is required: contact (415) 863-4563, ext. 328, or email sierra -at- forestethics.org. Lunch will be provided.
