Vote Environment 2006

Re-elect Abrams, Worth in Orinda

Two excellent incumbents are in a hard-fought race to retain their seats on the Orinda City Council. The Sierra Club urges Orinda voters to re-elect Laura Abrams and Amy Worth.

Laura Abrams

When the Sierra Club first endorsed Laura Abrams for the Orinda City Council, we had two reasons. She had led the successful battle to save the Art Deco Orinda Theatre from the wrecking ball, and she had great environmental instincts. She promised us that if elected she would work on recycling and solid-waste issues.

We got more than we bargained for. For the last 10 years Laura has led the way as Orinda's representative on the Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority, helping guide it towards aggressive curbside recycling programs.

She has also worked on developing land-use policies that enable residents to expand their Orinda homes without harming the creeks and stately oaks of the Orinda hillside. She was instrumental in bringing the farmers' market to Orinda. Laura is applauded for her hands-on, reasonable and rational approach to local issues.

Amy Worth

Amy Worth has served on the Orinda City Council for eight years. She is well known and respected for working with people from all parts of the community, from labor to business to parents, and of course environmentalists.

On the County Transportation Authority, Amy was the clear leader in working to get environmental concerns, especially growth management, into the Measure J transportation sales tax that passed in 2004. Following up on that success, she has worked hand-in-hand with the Sierra Club and other environmental groups in the effort to achieve a countywide Urban Limit Line (ULL) that would keep tight reins on sprawl.

Amy Worth and Laura Abrams can be counted on to help preserve Orinda's natural beauty and to provide a strong environmental voice on regional issues. The Sierra Club whole-heartedly supports their re-election! To join in their campaigns, contact or call (510) 848-0800, ext. 304.
