Concord: the Weapons Station and the City Council
Redevelopment of the Concord Naval Weapons Station (CNWS) offers a wonderful chance to preserve open space and wildlife habitat - or for developers to build
the largest sprawl project Contra Costa County has seen in decades (see July-August Yodeler, page 6).
The complex "base reuse" process will last many years, but our actions in the next two months could have decisive impacts. The next Concord City Council will
make key decisions on the direction of planning. Our votes - and our volunteer efforts - in this November's election could tip the balance. We must start the process
by creating a responsive City Council.
At Yodeler press time the Sierra Club has not yet completed its process for determining endorsements for Concord City Council, but we plan to send a postcard to
all Concord members to let you know which candidates we see as having the environment and community needs foremost - and how you can help them.
