Opening Golden Gate park to pedestrians
In July Mayor Gavin Newsom vetoed the Supervisors' proposed ordinance to open John F. Kennedy Drive (JFK) in Golden Gate Park to pedestrians rather than
motor vehicles on Saturdays. The roadway has been reserved for pedestrians on Sundays for many years.
In August, Supervisor Jake McGoldrick, in an attempt to mollify some of the opposition to the Saturday ordinance, introduced an ordinance to allow people
with disabilities to use motorized vehicles on JFK on Sundays (in some sort of slow-speed `elephant-train' format).
Pedestrians have JFK on just one day a week; vehicles own the road on all the other six.
The Sierra Club believes that the road should stay car-free on Sundays.
Within this limit, the Drive should be made as open and accessible as possible to people with disabilities, as required by the federal Americans With Disabilities Act and
any other applicable laws, without the use of motorized vehicles.
