Campaign for Marin launches August 27
Big push planned to achieve conservation in Countywide Plan
Sunday, August 27, 1 - 4 pm, Hillside picnic area, McInnis Park, San Rafael.
The Campaign for Marin, sponsored by the county's major environmental organizations, including the Sierra Club, to push for strong conservation policies in
the Marin Countywide Plan, is going public. Enjoy provocative entertainment provided by Marin leaders, plus refreshments, inspiration, and fun for
all. Bring a picnic lunch; bring the kids. (Beverages will be provided.)
The event will feature musical skit titled "The Da Vinci Plan", written by former Marin County counsel Doug Maloney and performed by leading Marin
environmentalists. It will illustrate one of the main issues in the draft plan - its projection of 10 million square feet of new commercial/industrial space, a 30% increase from 2000
and the equivalent of 18 TransAmerica pyramids. The Sierra Club wants this commercial space reduced, some to be replaced with housing and
mixed use.
At the event, the findings will be released of a study by the San Francisco Estuary Institute on the ecological values of the proposed Baylands Corridor. One of
the Campaign's major goals is for the county to designate this corridor with strong protections for our remaining Bay wetlands.
From Highway 101, take the Smith Ranch Road exit. Go east on Smith Ranch Road. Then turn left just before the entrance to McInnis Park. The Hillside picnic area is on the right.
