Nadel and Dellums for mayor of Oakland
The Sierra Club has endorsed both Ron Dellums and Nancy Nadel in the primary election for
Oakland mayor.
Ron Dellums
An 8,000-signature grassroots draft movement has brought Ron Dellums out of private life and into the fray to be elected Oakland's mayor. First elected to
Congress in opposition to the Vietnam War, for 28 years Dellums made the views of his Oakland/Berkeley constituents heard in Washington. A military-budget expert, Dellums
led the successful termination of numerous nuclear weapons systems. A staunch environmentalist, Dellums received perfect voting ratings from key environmental
groups, including the Sierra Club.
As mayor, Dellums envisions making Oakland a model for addressing the issues facing all urban areas: poverty, crime, schools, health care, affordable housing,
public transit, pollution, aging infrastructure, clean waterways, even potholes. Dellums is committed to open, transparent government where all stakeholders have a seat at
the decision-making table.
Nancy Nadel
For decades, through three terms on the Oakland City Council and before that two terms on the Board of the East Bay Municipal Utility District, Nancy Nadel has
led on environmental issues.
She worked for a Zero Dioxin Resolution, a Green Building Ordinance, an ordinance to reduce construction and demolition debris going to the landfill, a
Woodburning Fireplace Ordinance to reduce air pollution, and the Lake Merritt Master Plan, which led to Measure DD funding for lake improvements. She brought City Car Share
to Oakland and helped catalyze the West Oakland transit village. Her platform includes continuing work to decrease air pollution; creating, preserving and maintaining
open space; facilitating the development of environmental indicators in each neighborhood to track and enhance quality of life; and increasing access to and protection of
the lake, creeks, and estuary.
