San Francisco Dinner

San Francisco Dinner:

"Gotta walk (from Coast to Coast)"

Thursday, May 18, social hour 6 pm, dinner 7, show 8 - City Forest Lodge, 254 Laguna Honda Boulevard, San Francisco (across from Laguna Honda Hospital and downhill from Forest Hill Station; take Muni's K, L, M, or 43). Come early for street parking (no sidewalk parking please).

In 2005 Ken and Marcia Powers became the first backpackers to through-hike the American Discovery Trail from the Atlantic to the Pacific in a single season. They started their trek of the 4,900-mile ADT southern strand at the Atlantic on Feb. 27 and ended at the Pacific on Oct. 15 - finishing in 231 days - less than eight months - and averaging more than 21 miles a day, with only four non-hiking days. Ken and Marcia were already experienced long-distance hikers, having also completed the Triple Crown of hiking: the Pacific Crest, Continental Divide, and Appalachian Trails, each in a single hiking season. They have hiked over 13,000 miles through 30 states in the last six years.

Ken and Marcia will talk briefly about planning such a long trip in all its details. Their slide show will feature the beautiful and extreme variations of America's geography and tell about meeting diverse, warm-hearted, interesting fellow-Americans along the way. Ken focuses on macrophotography while Marcia emphasizes wildlife and vistas.
