East Bay Dinner

"The Grand - the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon: a Photo Journey"

Thursday, March 23, no-host cocktails/social hour - 6 pm, dinner - 7:00, program - 8:00, Berkeley Yacht Club on the Berkeley Marina, one block north of the west end of University Avenue (ample free parking is available in the Marina parking lots).

Join us for a slide presentation by Steve Miller based on his newly published "The Grand - The Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, a Photo Journey". This 210-page book, published by Berkeley-based Wilderness Press in conjunction with the Grand Canyon Association, features over 300 spectacular photos of the 236-mile river trip along the Colorado River corridor in the Grand Canyon, along with the author's expert commentary.

In the book's foreword, Lito Tejada-Flores writes: "Everyone knows something about the Grand Canyon, but very few actually know the Grand, and fewer still know it well. Steve Miller is one of those happy few."

Steve, a Cal alumnus, first studied photography at the campus ASUC Studio. In the '60s, while a student, he participated in Sierra Club's ski-touring activities. In 1971 his love of the outdoors took him to the Grand Canyon for his first river trip. He has since become a professional river guide and made 13 more trips through the canyon.

During the 1960s and '70s Steve was an Outward Bound instructor in Colorado, Oregon, Washington, California, and New Mexico. In 1980 he and his wife Kathy founded New Wave Rafting in Santa Fe, NM, which they continue to operate. They are both ski instructors in the winter months.

Steve will show both photos from the book and some of his favorites that weren't included. His narration will touch on aspects of Canyon geology, flora and fauna, river-running techniques, and the experience of spending 18 or more days at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. This presentation will be an eye-opener for those unfamiliar with this glorious world.

The author will have copies of his book available for sale at the dinner.

Dinner is $22, which includes tax and tip. To make a reservation, send your check payable to "Sierra Club", including your name and phone number, to:
