"Canoe Adventures on the Yukon"

A few years ago, Bruce "Ole" Ohlson of Pittsburg entertained us with a slide program of his 14,000-mile bicycle trip in Australia. We've invited him back to show and tell us about another of his adventure trips, this time exploring Alaska and Canada's Yukon Territory. Ole will describe his canoe trip on the Yukon River. On the 14th day, a bear came into camp and began biting his bow man. "It was nip and tuck for a few minutes," he says, "but pepper spray saved the day." Ole will also include slides of his ferry trip up the Inside Passage to Skagway, and his Greyhound bus ride back to the Lower 48 along the Alaska Highway.

Ole has bicycled over 88,000 miles in 28 countries and through-hiked both the Appalachian and the Pacific Crest Trails. He has worked as an adventure-travel leader and as a whitewater raft guide. A member of the Board of Directors of the East Bay Bicycle Coalition, Ole attends about 20 meetings a month to persuade government agencies to support a bicycle-friendly transit system.

Join us tonight to share a wild adventure (from a safe distance!) as Ole tells us about his North Country safari. Before the program, we'll socialize and munch goodies, and briefly discuss current environmental issues and upcoming events.
