Mount Diablo Group

"Journey to the Falkland Islands and Antarctica"

Wednesday, September 14, 7 pm, Winslow Center, 2590 Pleasant Hill Road, Pleasant Hill (corner of Taylor Boulevard and Pleasant Hill Road).

Take a break from the heat of summer and join the Mount Diablo Group on an armchair excursion to the high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere. Our guide, Dave Moyer, will present a slide presentation featuring the flora, fauna, and cultural history of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island, and Antarctica.

This area has received public attention in recent years due to revived interest in the exploits of British explorer Ernest Shackleton and his astounding open-boat journey in 1914. Moyer spent three summers in Antarctica as part of "Operation Deepfreeze", and will offer his insights on Shackelton's accomplishments.

Moyer is a retired Navy Medical Corps captain and currently heads the allergy department at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland. Over the past 30 years he has visited virtually every corner of the world, capturing his experiences in incredible photographs.
