San Francisco Dinner:
"A Natural History of the Sierra Nevada"
Thu., Sep. 15, social hour 6 pm, dinner 7, show 8 - City Forest Lodge, 254 Laguna Honda Boulevard, San Francisco (across from Laguna Honda Hospital
and downhill from Forest Hill Station; take Muni's K, L, M, or 43). Come early for street parking (no sidewalk parking please).
John (Jack) Muir Laws, a wildlife biologist and an associate of the California Academy of Sciences, has studied the natural history of the Sierra for many years.
Over the last three summers he has spent more than 80 days painting Sierra wildflowers from life. As both a naturalist and an artist, he illustrates both the feeling of the
living plant or animal and the details critical for identification. Laws is creating an illustrated field guide to more than 1,200 species of plants and animals of the Sierra Nevada.
Come hear Jack present an illustrated lecture about his work and the process of creating a field guide. This comprehensive and easy-to-use guide will allow
botanists to identify the insects that come to their flowers, birders to identify the trees in which birds perch, or hikers to identify the stars overhead at night. In 2004,
Laws published Sierra Birds: a Hiker's Guide.
