Happenings in West Contra Costa

El Cerrito has the chance to approve an exemplary infill housing project and privately funded creek restoration. At a time when Contra Costa County's Urban Limit Line is under attack from advocates of expanded sprawl development, it is important to showcase healthier development possibilities. The project is located at the southeast corner of the El Cerrito Plaza shopping center and would be handy to shopping and public transit.

The Group continues to follow the proposed Campus Bay development and the clean-up of toxics along Richmond's southeastern shoreline. This shoreline, long used for chemical plants, is severely polluted. California's Environmental Protection Agency recently transferred oversight of the clean-up to the Department of Toxic Substances Control, from the San Francisco Bay Water Quality Control District, which had proved unequal to the task.

The Group continues to work with the North Richmond Shoreline Open Space Alliance to protect this shoreline, especially Breuner Marsh, from destructive development. To help, contact Jonna at (510) 848-0800, ext. 312.
