"Bones, Bones, Bones" - with zooarcheologist Roadkill Nancy

Wednesday, July 13, 7 pm, Winslow Center, 2590 Pleasant Hill Road, Pleasant Hill (corner of Taylor Boulevard and Pleasant Hill Road).

The next general meeting of the Mount Diablo Group features "Roadkill Nancy" Valente and her collection of skulls, bones, and skins from native California animals.

Valente, a zooarcheologist, must identify and analyze bones from archeological sites uncovered during construction and development projects. To help identify remains, Valente maintains a skeletal reference collection. From this collection, and the unconventional ways in which it is gathered, Valente has earned the nickname "Roadkill Nancy".

One of Valente's recent efforts involved a project near Brentwood in Eastern Contra Costa County. Valente will explain how the faunal remains from this site help shed light on what the Mount Diablo region was like in aboriginal times.

Don't miss this exciting talk and demonstration at a new earlier time (7 pm). A hands-on experience you won't soon forget!

Nancy Valente holds a bachelor's degree in geography from San Francisco State University and a master's degree in archeology from California State University, Chico. A skilled interpreter, Valente regularly presents programs at the Marin Headlands and at Muir Woods National Monument.
