"Greek Island Odyssey"

The Delta Group's March general meeting will feature Frank Valle-Riestra of Walnut Creek with a slide presentation on the Ionian Islands of Greece. A long-time member of the Sierra Club, Frank is a retired chemical engineer and university professor whose favorite pastime is hiking with his wife Edith, often in faraway places all over the world.

The world recognizes Greece as the birthplace of European civilization, with recorded history dating from about 3,000 B.C.E. Magnificent ruins from ancient times can still be seen in all parts of Greece. The landscape of Greece includes a peninsula of jagged mountains and valleys, and more than 400 islands in the surrounding Mediterranean Sea. Frank's program concentrates on the traditional walking and hiking trails, and treasures to be discovered, on the jewel-like Ionian Islands just west of the Greek mainland. Our adventure starts in Ithaca, where legend tells us Ulysses was king, and where his patient wife Penelope waited 20 long years while he wandered on adventurous voyages. Join us tonight as Frank takes us on an armchair journey to explore the land where famous legends were born.

Before the program, we'll briefly discuss current environmental issues, and information about upcoming activities and events will be available.

Delta Group program meetings are usually held on the third Tuesday or Wednesday in January, March, May, September, and November, unless otherwise noted.
