Hike ratings

Hike ratings are based on distance and elevation gain:

1. Up to 6 miles
2. 6 - 10 miles
3. 10 - 15 miles
4. 15 - 20 miles
5. over 20 miles

A. under 1,000 feet
B. 1,000 - 2,000 feet
C. 2,000 - 3,000 feet
D. over 3,000 feet
Gain classifications represent the sum of all gains in elevation per day.

For Canine Hikes, participants need to bring the 4L's: leash, lunch, liquids, and litter bags.

Liability waivers

To participate in a Sierra Club outing, you will need to sign a liability waiver. (This policy is being phased in over the next several months.) To read a copy of the waiver prior to the outing, call (415) 977-5630 or display the Sierra Club web site waiver page.

Carpooling

In addition to the main gathering points, some listings include carpool points. We encourage you to carpool. Carpooling helps the environment by burning less gas and reducing the number of cars on the road, and allows folks without cars to participate.

Unless otherwise noted these carpools are no-host; we cannot guarantee that drivers will show up. The Sierra Club does not arrange carpools and assumes no liability for carpool participants.

Check before you hike!

In hot, dry summer weather, open space areas may be closed due to fire danger. Leaders may have to cancel or change scheduled activities.

To find out about possible fire closures, call after 2 pm the day before. The Marin County Fire Department public-service hotline at (415) 499-7191 covers parks in Marin County. The East Bay Regional Parks Fire Department at (510) 881-1833 covers the East Bay Regional Parks.

Chapter activities will go as scheduled if possible. Call the leader if in doubt
