ABOUT THE YODELER

Corrections

The "Transportation expenditure plan" item in "Marin updates" on page 12 of the JULY-AUGUST Yodeler erroneously stated that 9% of the money in the plan would be set aside for upgrading the Novato Narrows of Highway 101. In fact, this funding would go towards closing the gap on 101 between Lucky Drive and San Pedro Road in San Rafael.

In "Fremont landfill decision will fund recycling, habitat" (JULY-AUGUST Yodeler, page 18), the legal complexities were oversimplified. In fact, Waste Management's suit against Fremont was dismissed in September 2001, but reinstated on appeal. David Tam's suit was not dismissed, and therefore blocked the project from proceeding. Fremont settled over a year later with both Tam and Waste Management. Fremont agreed to prepare a new Environmental Impact Report. The earlier one had considered only the 68-mile-distant Forward Landfill near Stockton, but the new one was to consider also the much closer Altamont Landfill. Tam and Waste Management agreed not to oppose such a new EIR. As a result, Fremont ended up selecting Altamont for disposal, a decision which saves Fremont residents and businesses $3.53 per ton in disposal costs, while generating as much as $2 million per year in recycling and landfill mitigation fees for Alameda County programs.

"Yes on Alameda County Measure A" (JULY-AUGUST Yodeler, page 13) stated that one-fourth of the money raised by Measure A would go for preventive public-health efforts, including such environmental health programs as turn-ins of household hazardous waste, toxicology, vector control, and inspection of solid-waste facilities. In fact, this portion of Measure A funds could also be used for senior-indigent patient care provided by community-based health-care providers and/or to partially offset uncompensated emergency-care costs.

"Vote yes for Contra Costa open space" (JULY-AUGUST Yodeler, page 5) stated that voting on the Contra Costa open-space tax measure will be weighted by area and value of land. In fact, the voting will be weighted by benefit received by the property.
