FEATURE STORIES

"To explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth" - this is at the heart of the Sierra Club's mission - and it explains much of what is unique about the Club.

Other organizations work to protect nature, and others sponsor hikes and other outings, but no other organization has so effectively combined the two approaches to develop a national membership actively dedicated to protecting our environment.

The Bay Area has a similar uniqueness. Nowhere else in the country do the inhabitants of a major urban area have such convenient and extensive access to protected natural lands. The park systems of the Bay Area are unparalleled, and within just a few hours drive are immense expanses of wilderness and wild rivers in the Sierra Nevada and the Coast Ranges. Geography has indeed favored us, but the Sierra Club and in particular the Bay Chapter have played a significant role in creating and preserving this recreational paradise.
