Snowcamping Photo Gallery Help

We have set up a photo gallery page for sharing snowcamping trip photos - please note that this project is still in beta, and hence still a little rough around the edges. Also, while we do have a reasonable amount of disk space available for gathering photos, we do request that you "reasonably" limit yourself to the better photos for a trip (e.g. 50 is fine, 2000 is a stretch!). We welcome your input and feedback. Please email us if you have difficulty, or encounter inappropriate material.

The photo submission site is essentially a web gallery where anyone can upload or download photos, and includes built-in slideshows. The site allows you to access the full-sized original images to print or save (which many of the typical photo-sharing sites don't do). It also gives you the option to download whole albums as a zip file, or transfer images to Shutterfly for printing. It should (hopefully) be pretty straightforward, but we've included some instructions below as well, just in case!

Viewing photos

To view photos, click on the album you want to view, and either click on individual thumbnails to see a larger version, or click "view slideshow" on the left bar.

Downloading/Printing Photos

You can easily download an entire album as a zip file, or send an entire album to Shutterly for printing. First, in the parent page for the album, select "Add album to cart". The page will update, and show you the list of pictures (with thumbnails) in your cart. In the top right corner, under "cart actions", you can select either "Download in zip" (and then click "Go") to download a zip file containing all of the pictures in your cart, or select "Print in Shutterfly" (and then click "Go") to send the images in your cart to a shutterfly page where you can select print size/etc.

Uploading photos

To upload photos:
  1. Go to the photo gallery site (this link opens in a separate window). If no album exists for your group, you can create a new album at the top level. Otherwise, you can click into an existing group's album and add a new sub-album there (if there is no top-level thumbnail (e.g., the album is empty), just click on the "no thumbnail" link). You can browse through the album hierarchy to get an idea how things are set up.
  2. Create a new album for your pictures: The site is set up so that for a given trip each person adds their pictures in a separate album (to prevent confusion). When you are in the location where you'd like to add the new album for your pictures, choose "add album" from the bar on the left - a new page will open requesting information from you. Under "Name" enter your name as a single word (e.g. mark_spiller). Enter information describing the trip in the "Title" and "Summary" fields (e.g. the trip name, date, and your name, for example: "Group 2 - Lassen, Mar 3-4, Mark's Pictures"), and then click the "Create" button at the bottom.
  3. Adding pictures to an album: After creating the album, you will reach a page with "Edit Album" at the top. Don't change anything here, instead select "Add Items" from the bar on the left. There are several upload methods that you can choose from, but typically (unless you know otherwise) you should choose "upload applet", which will load a Java upload tool (if your system does not support Java, please contact us).

In the upload applet, you can either drag photos into the left area of the upload tool or click "add photos" to get a dialog in which you can select photos. After dragging or selecting photos, the file names for the selected photos will show up on the left side of the applet area. You can click on individual pictures in the list to edit the title the picture will have in the album (the default is the filename of the picture). Leave the "Resize pictures before upload" unchecked (this feature is disabled anyway).

Click "upload" to upload your photos! - a dialog window will open up, showing the upload process. When the photos have uploaded, you can click on the album link at the top to see your album and photos.

NOTE: We've been having some intermittent problems with the gallery software - if some of your thumbnails show up as broken images, this is most likely a server problem (that primarily affects larger images). We're still debugging this, so in the meantime if this happens don't delete/re-load anything, but instead just drop us an email at the below address, and we'll regenerate the thumbnails.

  4. When done adding photos to the album, you can email us if you'd like us to make the album read-only, so that no one else can over-write or delete your photos.

If you have any problems or questions, feel free to email us at .
