November hikes


Always bring lunch and water. Consider layered clothing, sunscreen and hiking poles.
Canine hikers should also bring leashes, litter bags, and water for their dogs.

San Bruno Mountain.  Explore San Bruno Mountain with San Bruno Mountain Watch, a group dedicated to protecting the Mountain and its rare plants and endangered Mission Blue, Elfin, and Silverspot butterflies.  Bring: wind/sun protection. Wear sturdy shoes and long pants. Meet: 10 am at the San Bruno Mountain Watch office, 44 Visitacion Avenue, Brisbane. Directions: drivers take Bayshore Boulevard to Old County Road, main entrance to Brisbane. Pass city park, and go straight up Visitacion. Or take #292 SamTrans bus, departing 9:12 from Transbay Terminal; five minute walk to meeting place. Call SamTrans at (800)660-4287 for northbound bus information. East Peak Mount Tamalpais.  Enjoy a 13-mile loop with 3000' elevation gain on Mount Tamalpais. Climb the Dipsea Steps and the Fern Trail to the summit of East Peak. Enjoy spectacular views of San Francisco, Alcatraz and Marin Headlands from the rocky summit. Return by 4 pm. Heavy rain cancels.  Meet: 9 am sharp departure from Old Mill Park in Mill Valley. Directions: drive west on Blithedale Avenue off Highway 101 and continue west to Mill Valley. Turn left on Throckmorton and continue through town to intersection of Throckmorton and Cascade Drive. Ring Mountain.  Discover this easy hike with outstanding 360 degree views, unique rocks, flowers and Indian petroglyphs. Back by midday. San Francisco Bay discovery hike.  A two part event. The hike is preceded by a slide show.  Meet: 10 am for the slide show, or 11 am for the hike. Directions: slide show will be at the Pacifica Community Center, Highway 1 and Crespi in Pacfica. The hike trailhead will be at the far east end of Fassler Avenue in Pacifica. Lands End coastal walk.  An all-day tour along the edges of the Presidio and coast from the Marina Green to the Cliff House. Moderate-to-leisurely pace. Return to start by 6 pm. Tilden Park canine hike.  Join Linda, Randall, Frolic and Breeze on a moderate loop, including the Seaview Trail. Return to cars around 1 pm with no lunch stop, but time for a quick snack. Rodeo Beach and Point Bonita Lighthouse.  An easy hike from the beach up the hill and back, including the visitor's center and hopefully with a docent-led, guided tour of the Point Bonita lighthouse. Lake Chabot.  Hike through the shady trails of the Grass Valley area of Lake Chabot Park.  Bring: food to share at a potluck lunch. Meet: 10 am at the Equestrian Center on Skyline Boulevard. Directions: from Highway 580, exit and go east on Keller to the top of the hill. Turn left on Skyline, and look for Equestrian Center Park on your right. A walk in old San Francisco.  A relaxed and very slow hike with several rest stops. Route includes Jackson Square, Chinatown, North Beach and possibly Russian Hill. A few stairways and steep climbs. Hike finishes around 5:15pm in time for optional dinner afterwards. Rain cancels.  Bring: water and coins for return by Muni. Meet: 11:45 am in Sydney Walton Park near fountain. Rockridge stairs (2).  We'll hike from Rockridge BART up the historic Rockridge stairs with a spectacular view of the Bay area. Ohlone (Siplichiquin) Village Sites.  A visit to Indian shellmounds: life-in-place along the Bayside ridges with San Bruno Mountain Watch. A hike through 5000 years of human presence and the intricate balance of the original San Francisco Bay people; native plants to crystals to grizzly bears.  Bring: wind/sun protection. Pine Mountain/San Geronimo Ridge.  Hike from Azalea Hill trailhead and head up to Pine Mountain and its views of Big Rock Ridge, Bolinas Ridge, Kent Lake and Mount Saint Helena. Head down through the forest and head up to Green Hill and San Geronimo Ridge on our way back to the trailhead. Directions: from Fairfax Theater on Broadway left turn to Fairfax/Bolinas Rd., two miles to left turn at Marin Municipal Water District public lands, one mile on Sky Oaks Road. Hike finishes around 5:15 pm in time for optional dinner afterwards. Rain cancels.  Bring: this is a city hike but it is still necessary to bring lunch and liquids.
