Environmental Action Alert: A rare opportunity to protect and save the shoreline in Richmond. [Updated: 2/15/08]Protect the Richmond Shoreline! The Richmond shoreline has been abused by years of use as a dump, a refinery, and other toxic industries. Now developers want to make even more quick money by building expensive housing in gated-communities, casinos, and warehouses! Unfortunately, some members of the city council have the ill-advised idea that building along the shoreline - and therefore outside of the city - will improve the community. To add insult to injury, these plans would bar access of the local residents to their own shoreline! But we have a great opportunity to change this right now. Richmond has begun the process of updating its General Plan. We have the opportunity to make sure that Richmond's longterm development is in the downtown of the city, where Richmond's residents can actually benefit from development. With 32 miles of shoreline, much of it undeveloped but also much of it in need of restoration, we have a vast environmental stake in the plan's detailed rules for developing or preserving these lands. Richmond's City Council has the authority to approve a General Plan that is good for Richmond's longterm development or a General Plan that destroys Richmond's outdoor recreation opportunities and environmental equitability. Please tell the City Council members that you know Richmond can protect our shoreline and not sell it off to developers!
