Environmental Action Alert: New Buses for Cleaner Air and Less Traffic [Updated: 2/26/09]

Rapid Buses for Cool Cities

AC Transit is working on a new, significantly better form of bus service from San Leandro to Downtown Berkeley. Called Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), the new service will follow routes along International Boulevard in San Leandro and Oakland, and Telegraph Avenue in Oakland and Berkeley. It will extend around UC to Shattuck Avenue to serve downtown Berkeley.

The new system promises faster, more efficient service along this highly traveled route. As BRT shortens trip time and makes schedules more reliable and buses more frequent, bus ridership along the corridor is expected to increase by 30% to 40%, with corresponding traffic reductions, as people who currently drive switch to transit. BRT will bring reductions in auto pollution and emissions of global-warming gases. Please show your support and help make fast, efficient bus service a reality for this key San Leandro-Berkeley corridor!

Dear President of the Board AC Transit and Mayors of Berkeley, Oakland and San Leandro,
