Vote Lieber and Panian for Albany City Council
The Sierra Club endorses incumbent Bob Lieber and newcomer Leo Panian for election to the Albany City Council.
Note: This article went to press before the endorsement for Ellen Toomey was completed. We also request support for Ellen Toomey.
Bob Lieber
Bob Lieber has been one of our strongest advocates for the Sierra Club vision for the Albany waterfront. He was a staunch opponent of the Caruso mall and of Magna's attempt to build a "racino" (race-track casino) on the waterfront. Mall supporters are targeting him in this election because he has been so much our advocate. These are the same people who attacked the Sierra Club for opposing the mall.
Leo Panian
Leo Panian is a long-time supporter of the Sierra Club vision for the Albany waterfront. He has consistently supported Albany's efforts to establish a coherent, informed plan for the future of our waterfront. As a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission since 2004, he has experience on land-use issues. He promises to maintain Albany's unique thriving small-town character within the cosmopolitan and multi-cultural Bay Area. He will work with our other endorsed candidate, Bob Lieber, to ensure that the Albany waterfront is not turned over to developers and to give Albany its green vision for the future.
