Hike and walk ratings consist of a number-letter code where the number is the distance and the letter is the amount of uphill climbing.

Grade Elevation Gain
1: Up to 6 miles
2: 6 - 10 miles
3: 10 - 15 miles
4: 15 - 20 miles
5: over 20 miles
A: Up to 1000 ft
B: 1000 to 2000 ft.
C: 2000 to 3000 ft
D: Over 3000 ft
E: Over 3500 ft

So a hike rated 2B means that the distance covered will be from 6 to 10 miles and the total elevation gain will be between 1000 and 2000 ft. A Mini-hike is 4 miles or less and has an elevation gain of 500 ft or less.

Backpack ratings consist of a number-letter code indicating length, elevation gain, and difficulty.

Miles/day Climb/day (ft.) Travel
1: up to 6
2: 6 - 10
3: 10 - 15
A: Up to 1,000
B: 1,000 - 2000
C: 2,000 - 3,000
D: over 3,000
T -Trail
1 - Limited/easy X-C
2 - Moderate X-C
3 - Strenuous/difficult X-C

So a trip rated 1B3 means that the most strenuous day will be as much as six miles of hiking, 2000 ft. of climb, and over strenuous to difficult cross-country terrain.

Inner City Outings Fundraising Event at REI SF 0. Come help support Inner City Outings during our spring fundraiser at REI in San Francisco. The fundraiser takes place during REI's Annual Anniversary Sale so come grab some amazing deals while also supporting your local Sierra Club community activities. Baked goods, drinks, raffel, and opportunity to learn more about ICO will be available. Inner City Outings (ICO) is an all-volunteer outreach program of the Sierra Club that provides wilderness experiences for individuals who might not otherwise have them. Most participants are young people from urban communities, but ICO also conducts trips for other groups that do not have access to outdoor activities. ICO groups vary in size and extent of activities based on the abilities of the leaders. ICO Rafting, as we call ourselves, does strictly whitewater rafting (and on-river camping). ICO Rafting is the only ICO group that specializes in whitewater rafting. The goal of the Inner City Outings program is to help people discover the beauty and challenges of the wild lands we treasure, acquire the skills necessary to enjoy them safely, and learn that human activity and the natural world are interrelated. The program's success helps increase environmental awareness, interpersonal skills, and participants' self-esteem through active involvement with nature. San Francisco Bay Chapter's ICO program is the place where ICO began, in 1971! A small group of Sierra Club outings leaders decided to take urban youth into the great outdoors. Since its founding, ICO has spread to more than 50 cities across the nation, involving hundreds of dedicated volunteers serving thousands of participants every year. Cost: No set cost. "Shored Up"--film showing. New People Cinema, 1746 Post Street (near Webster) in Japantown. The Sierra Club Bay Chapter will be co-presenting the West Coast premiere of the documentary "Shored Up" by Ben Kalina, and our Bay Chapter director Michelle Myers will be there to speak about the Chapter's efforts to protect the shoreline. "Shored Up" asks tough questions about our coastal communities and our relationship to the land. What will a rising sea do to our homes, our businesses, and the survival of our communities? Can we afford to pile enough sand on our shores to keep the ocean at bay? In Long Beach Island NJ, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina, surfers, politicians, scientists, and residents are racing to answer these questions. Beach engineering has been our only approach so far, but is there something else out there to be explored? Our development of the coastlines puts us in a tough predicament, and it’s time to start looking for solutions. For more information, see: http://shoredupmovie.com The 2013 San Francisco Green Film Festival includes 50 films from around the globe, with over 70 visiting filmmakers and guest speakers covering environmental topics surrounding clean energy, green chemistry, food, housing, trash, water, and art in the environment. Oaklavía--Love Our Lake Day Party. Do you love Lake Merritt, the first wildlife refuge established in North America in 1870? Well, so does the Sierra Club! We are one of the sponsors for Oaklavía, a three-mile car-free celebration taking place as part of the Love Our Lake Day festivities organized by the city of Oakland and Walk Oakland Bike Oakland to commemorate the completion of the new Lake Merritt Boulevard (formerly 12th Street) Bridge. Walk, bike, stroll, dance, paddle, and pedal the Lake. Activities include salsa by the lake, food trucks (Snow Park and East 16th Street), free bike rentals including tandems, tennis, gondola rides, boating, bike repair, and live music. It will be a fun, safe environment for an entire family to enjoy. The San Francisco Bay Chapter will be tabling at Oaklavía and we need volunteers to inform visitors about the Chapter's events and our campaigns such as the Oakland Compost Collection campaign , and to guide participants in a fun, eco-friendly outdoor activity to activate the roadway space that is being reclaimed fromcars for one day. To volunteer, contact Bay Chapter conservation organizer Jess Dervin-Ackerman at: jess@sfbaysc.org or (510)848-0800, ext. 304. The new Lake Merritt Boulevard bridge replaces the old 12-lane structure with a new six-lane bridge that includes bike lanes and sidewalks, and a second pedestrian-only bridge over the lake channel. The project also removed a dam that for 143 years restricted tidal flows from San Francisco Bay from entering Lake Merritt. This $35 million project was funded by Measure DD, a $198.25 million bond focused on waterfront improvements at Lake Merritt and the Oakland Estuary, approved by over 80% of Oakland voters in November 2002, with additional funding from the State Coastal Conservancy and Federal highway funds. COYOTE GULCH (UTAH) - Backpack. This is a trip into some of best of red rock of Utah with shear high walled canyons and cathedral-like campsites. Water is abundant and includes springs. The first day we meet around noon at the Escalante visitor center where we will obtain our permit. Once we reach the trailhead we will hike in 4 miles and camp. The next day we will move another 5 miles to the next camp, the 3rd day another 4 or 5 miles to our lowest campsite where we can stay 2 nights or if we want to move back to where we were the previous night. We will likely hike out June 26 but we will have the 27th available if needed. Most of the hike is fairly easy but requires wading back and forth across the creek. Near the end is a short dry trail to bypass some waterfalls, of which we will be camping next to. This is definitely the summer warm season, I have done this trip many times at this time of year and find it quite pleasant as a rule here. At this time of year we should see some bright lights moving around at night – some kind of fire flies. Limit 12. Leader: David Hardy, (702) 875-4826, or hardyhikers [at] embarqmail [dot] com.
