Alaska wilderness slide show
Wednesday, September 17, 7 - 9 pm, Bay Chapter Office, 2530 San Pablo Avenue (same building as Ecology Center) in Berkeley (on AC Transit's 72 and 9 lines).
The Sierra Club Northern Alameda County Group invites you to a slide show on some of our nation's last and biggest wild placesin Alaska.
Alaska is known for its high mountains, glaciers, grizzly bears, and wildlife, but did you ever get to see these pictures on a large screen, narrated by someone with long experience in Alaska? Sierra Club wilderness activist Vicky Hoover has agreed to visit the Chapter Office to present slides from her many trips to Alaska's Arctic. These include some historic exploratory trips led by the Club's Alaska Task Force chair Ed Wayburn and more-recent official Sierra Club outings to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Vicky has worked for more than 20 years on behalf of the Club as an activist on wilderness issues for both Alaska and the Lower 48.
Come meet one of the Sierra Club's most-intrepid wilderness defenders. The event is free, though a $5 donation is appreciated.
To RSVP, contact organizing manager or call (510) 848-0800, ext. 323
Berkeley environmental candidates' forum
Saturday, October 11, Berkeley Community Media, 2239 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, a few blocks from Berkeley BART.
To be broadcast on community-access Channels 28 and 33, www.betv.org; for viewing schedule go to www.betv.org/btv33.html
The Sierra Club Northern County Alameda Group is a sponsor of the Berkeley Candidates' Forum on the Environment, Transportation, and Land Use for City Council candidates. As a sponsor, the Sierra Club will help formulate questions and help in organizing the forum. Candidates for mayor - Tom Bates (incumbent) and Shirley Dean (former mayor) - are being invited along with candidates for City Council including the District 4 seat opened by the recent death of Dona Spring
This is the third time the Sierra Club has sponsored such a forum. Each time the response has been overwhelmingly positive. It is a way for the Sierra Club to emphasize its environmental priorities with all candidates and to educate the Berkeley public about the environmental issues facing Berkeley.
Other organizations that have been asked to sponsor the event and contribute questions include the Ecology Center, Kyoto USA, Bay Localize, Friends of Bus Rapid Transit, Bicycle Friendly Berkeley Coalition, Transportation and Land Use Coalition, Livable Berkeley, Friends of Strawberry Creek Plaza, EcoCity Builders, and Walk & Roll Berkeley.
