"Travels on the Eighth Continent:
a Natural-History Adventure in Madagascar, an Island of Endemism"

Thursday, September 18, social hour - 6 pm, dinner - 7, show - 8, City Forest Lodge, 254 Laguna Honda Boulevard, San Francisco (across from Laguna Honda Hospital and downhill from Forest Hill Station; take Muni's K, L, M or 43). Come early for street parking (no sidewalk parking).

In September 2006, Allan Ridley and Helen McKenna-Ridley joined a group of 10 travelers led by Luke and Nancy Cole for a 15-day exploration of the principal remaining wild areas of Madagascar. Their presentation will highlight the diverse habitats of the island and the exciting endemic wildlife they were fortunate to observe and photograph. They will discuss and illustrate the contemporary economic situation of the people of Madagascar and look for hope for the future in the education of the young and development of eco-tourism and economic aid.

Allan Ridley taught biology and ornithology at the Urban School of San Francisco. Helen McKenna-Ridley taught biology and environmental science at George Washington High School and was principal of Raoul Wallenberg High School. Together they have traveled widely and have led birding and natural-history trips to Costa Rica, Ecuador, New Zealand, and Australia. On the first Sunday of each month they lead a bird walk through the Botanical Gardens in Golden Gate Park.
