San Francisco Dinner
"Down the Colorado With Paddle and Camera"
Thursday, October 16, social hour - 6 pm, dinner - 7, show - 8, at City Forest Lodge, 254 Laguna Honda Boulevard, San Francisco (across from Laguna Honda Hospital and downhill from Forest Hill Station; take Muni's K, L, M, or 43). Come early for street parking (no sidewalk parking please).
Last September, to celebrate turning 70, Allen Tucker took a two-week raft trip through the Grand Canyon, 225 river miles of spectacular scenery sculpted from rocks formed during two billion years of our planet's evolution.
Allen's presentation will share visual highlights and describe the logistics, physical challenges, recommended gear, and group dynamics of this trip. In addition Allen wants to talk about a topic not covered in standard guidebooks - equipment and techniques for the amateur photographer:
- what camera should I take?
- do I need a tripod?
- how do I protect a camera from water, dust, heat, and pounding?
- how does the light in the canyon differ from the light in my street?
- if not "auto", what settings should I use?
- JPEG or Raw?
- how do I charge my battery and download images from my card while in the canyon?
- how do I process all these digital image files?
- you didn't answer my questions; where can I get advice on improving my photography?
Allen Tucker is a retired professor of physics, whose research included determining ages of geologic formations by trace-isotope analysis. He first visited the Grand Canyon in 1973, taking the mule trip from the North Rim to Roaring Falls.
