East Bay Dinner

"Falkland Islands/Antarctica Adventure"

Thursday February 24, no-host cocktails/social hour - 6 pm, dinner - 7:00, program - 7:50, Berkeley Yacht Club on the Berkeley Marina, one block north of the west end of University Avenue (ample free parking is available in the Marina parking lots).

Join us for a journey to the austerely beautiful but seldom visited outposts of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island, and Antarctica. Although the emphasis of this visually stunning slideshow will be the wildlife of these remote locations, David Moyer will intersperse his presentation with photographs and commentary on the hardy folk who actually inhabit these locales year-round.

Moyer will also comment on the astounding survival story of British explorer Ernest Shackleton whose expeditionary ship Endurance was surrounded and crushed by Antarctic ice floes in 1914 as his expedition was en route to the South Pole. Shackleton and his crew drifted on ice for five months before setting forth into open waters in recovered life boats and traversing nearly 1,000 miles first to uninhabited Elephant Island in the South Shetland group and then to South Georgia Island located 800 miles to the east of Tierra del Fuego.

The presentation will also include flora, fauna, and experiential highlights from three summers in the 1970s which Moyer spent participating in Operation Deep Freeze in McMurdo and at the South Pole.

Moyer is a retired Navy Medical Corps captain and is now the chief of the allergy department at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland. He has been visiting and exploring far-flung reaches of the world for 30 years. He gave an extremely well-received East Bay Dinner presentation two years ago on the High Andes of Peru. Moyer is noted for his stunningly beautiful photography.

Dinner is $22, which includes tax and tip. To make a reservation, send your check for $22 payable to "Sierra Club", including your name and phone number, to:
