About Us

Welcome to the Northern Alameda County (NAC) Group. We represent Sierra Club members and consider environmental issues affecting lands in the cities of Oakland, Berkeley, Albany, Emeryville, Alameda, Piedmont, and San Leandro. The issues / campaigns we discuss can include housing, transportation, air quality, environmental justice, and natural-resource protection. Our meetings are open to the public; all are welcome.

1. Northern Alameda County Group Monthly Conservation and Executive Group Meeting -

Fourth Mondays, 7 to 9:30 PM

Our conservation committee generally meets on the 4th Monday evening of each month to hear about current topics around the near East Bay (Oakland, Berkeley, Albany, Alameda, Emeryville, Piedmont and San Leandro). We first discuss issues, then we may propose resolutions for action, and then these resolutions are again voted on by the group's executive committee (the 9 elected leaders representing the entire group.) Any member can attend and stay for as long as they like. Please notify us in advance if you are new, so that we can introduce / welcome you (or just stop by the meeting.)

Time: 7 to 9:30 PM

2530 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley, 2 blocks south of the intersection @ San Pablo Ave. and Dwight Way

2. Green Friday Presentations -

Second Fridays

On the second Friday of each month, volunteers and the Northern Alameda County Group host "Green Friday Presentations", a series of free public talks (with discussion) by expert speakers on the most important environmental issues of our times—at the Chapter Office, 2530 San Pablo Ave. (one block south of Dwight Way) in Berkeley. We are about to change our format: starting with October, there will be no potluck. Instead doors will open at 7 pm for beverages and snacks, with presentations beginning at 7:30. Suggested donation is $3. For more information, contact Ken Peterson at kenpeterson45@att.net or Joanne Drabek at (510)530-5216.

3. Support the Oakland and Berkeley Climate Action Coalition

"Think global, act local" by volunteering with the Oakland Climate Action Coalition (OCAC) or Berkeley Climate Action Coalition (BCAC)! The Sierra Club are one of many member organizations. We always need new volunteers to attend meetings and contribute, while keeping the NAC Group informed of the coalition's activities.

Attend the upcoming OCAC General Meeting on Thursday, November 21 at 9:30 AM. Councilmember Dan Kalb's office has graciously reserved a meeting room for us at City Hall, Hearing Room 3 that is located on the 1st Floor. Please rsvp to Sandra Hamlat, Program Director, Oakland Climate Action Coalition, at sandra.hamlat@oaklandclimateaction.org or by calling (510) 363-5522. For information how you can help the Sierra Club with the OCAC, please contact Kent Lewandowski at 510-759-6646.

The goal of BCAC is to assist city staff and the Berkeley City Council with ideas and technical expertise that will help reach the goal of the Berkeley Climate Action Plan, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Berkeley by 80% by the Year 2050. BCAC currently consists of the following working groups: Land Use (i.e. Vacant Lots to Community Gardens); Water; Community Engagement; Transportation; Community Choice Energy; and Multifamily Building Energy and Waste. Please contact Igor Tregub at itregub@gmail.com or by calling 510-848-0800 x304 (Jessica Dervin) to get more involved!
