WHAT WE DO: The Hiking Section of the San Francisco Bay Chapter offers a wide variety of day hikes in Marin, Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, and city hikes in San Francisco. Fifty to sixty hikes are scheduled each month on Saturdays, Sundays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and on most holidays. Hikes do not require advance registration or signups.

HIKES ARE GRADED by a number-letter code indicating length and uphill climbing:

1 up to 6 miles
2 6 to 10 miles
3 10 to 15 miles
4 15 to 20 miles
5 over 20 miles
     Elevation Gain
A under 1000 feet
B 1000 to 2000 feet
C 2000 to 3000 feet
D 3000 to 4000 feet
E Over 4000 feet

Mini-Hikes are 3 to 4 miles in length with less than 500 feet of uphill climbing.

WHO CAN COME: Everyone is welcome on our hikes; however, you must have suitable footwear, lunch and water, and be able to keep up with the group. If you can't keep up, you may be asked to turn back. These hikes are on uneven terrain and are not accessible to everyone. If you are unsure of your ability, call the leader and find out what is planned. Children and dogs (except for canine hikes) are usually inappropriate, and subject to the leader's approval. Dogs are not permitted on many hiking trails, and if permitted must always be on a leash.

ALL PARTICIPANTS in Sierra Club activities are required to sign a legal waiver at the start of each activity releasing the Sierra Club from liability.

GETTING THERE: Most people drive, but most of our hikes are accessible by public transit: Golden Gate Transit, BART or MUNI. Bus riders should check routes and schedules to arrive before the posted meeting time. Leaders are not obliged to stay past that time. Don't be late!

The two most often used meeting places in Marin are Miller & Locust in Mill Valley (the bus stop in front of the 7-Eleven store), and the Fairfax Parkade (the parking lot across from the Fairfax Theater).

Carpool riders share any entrance or parking fees. Carpool points in San Francisco and the East Bay are sometimes listed. If a carpool point is listed, the leader will be there at the time listed, but will not wait. Unless specifically mentioned, reservations are not required for our hikes; just show up at the meeting point.

WHAT ABOUT WEATHER? Our hikes are usually held rain or shine unless the listing specifies "Rain Cancels". However, leaders may change the hike plan because of weather or trail conditions, or sometimes even cancel the hike. Leaders will usually be at the meeting place regardless of the weather, even if the hike is to be cancelled. Weather in the hike area may well be different from your local conditions. In very hot summer weather, some hiking areas may be closed to public use because of fire danger.

DETAILED INFORMATION: Full information on each hike is given in the calendar listings. Information on a specific hike is usually available from the hike leader; phone numbers are given in each listing. Never call before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m.
